Distorted Thinking – Mind Reading

Making negative assumptions about other people’s thoughts and motives is a form of distorted thinking called mind reading.

This form of thinking will make you miserable and destroys your self-esteem.  If you ever find yourself being sucked into the mind reading trap, ask yourself:

  • Are my assumptions true or just a made up story in my head?

  1. Mentalization or ‘theory of mind’ are concepts relating to mind reading. When we are able to take a step back and realize that our thoughts are just thoughts and not reality, we feel better.
