Are You a Bibliophile?

According to the Oxford dictionary, a bibliophile is “a person who collects or has a great love of books.”

You may be a bibliophile if:

  1. When you walk into a bookstore, your facial expressions resemble that of a kid in a candy store.
  2. Your friends confiscate your credit card before you enter a bookstore, for your own protection.
  3. You have ever spent time in a library just looking at the rows and rows of books.
  4. Your favorite vacation destination is the Library of Congress.
  5. You haven’t seen any of the popular movies that everybody is talking about, but you read the books.
  6. As a child you wanted to grow up and become a librarian.
  7. You have books hidden all over you house, but still feel an overwhelming desire to buy more books.
  8. The quote “I cannot live without books,” by Thomas Jefferson is your personal mantra.

If you can think of any warning signs that I missed, please let me know in the comment section.

  1. ·You find a way to work a quote from characters in books into your daily life as advice.

·You dream of book characters as friends.

·People no longer give you cash for holidays and birthdays, they ALL give you gift cards to Barnes and Noble because they know that’s where you’ll go.

  2. So funny, Lynn! Yes, I visited the local used book seller this week with a promise to just run in a take a quick look and walked out three hours later with a twenty-one book stash…pathetic. (My summer reading pile is very large!) Barnes and Noble is just dangerous. Wonderful post!

  3. My late husband was a collector or all sorts of things including a huge number of books. We even moved his precious rocks (!!!) from Utah to Oregon. (sigh) These days I’ve been giving away the few remaining ones, mostly our library where I get nearly all of my books these days. I’ve downsized from a 4 bedroom house to a 2 bedroom. Not having the clean a larger house leaves me more time to read. 😀

I guess I could say “no” to your question in the title. ;D

  4. I answered Yes to most of those statements. When I was a kid I cut class and headed straight for the Queens Public Library located on Merrick Blvd. in Jamaica, Queens!! I’ve never been to the Library of Congress but maybe one day I will go there.

I did study for my MLS but did not reach that goal.

When I moved from Queens to Brooklyn in 2012 I packed up most of my books and put them in storage since I now live in a much smaller space.

Now I devour my books via Kindle. #1 I have no place to store hard copy or paper back books. #2 After my minor stroke in Nov. 2008 I lost most of the sight in my left eye so now everything needs to be Large Type. I asked the Lord to let me keep the vision in my right eye so I could read. My prayers were answered. Kindles are Blessings for persons with vision problems. Otherwise I’d be like that Twilight Zone episode “Time Enough at Last.” Just call me Ms. Magoo!! LOL!!

  5. Let’s see… I once owned a used & rare bookstore, and worked in a library for nearly eight years. And any flat surface in our house is called a “stack-upon,” because books somehow get stacked upon them. No, I couldn’t be a bibliophile. 🙂
