Hiking in Honduras

Last week, I went on a seven day cruise.  Our first stop was in Honduras where I spent the day hiking through Eco Park.

The park is full of monkeys, birds, and other fun animals.  There is one monkey that the guides named Billy and he is rather feisty.  Billy will jump on people, open their backpacks, and then steal their stuff.  While we were there, Billy managed to grab someone’s water bottle.  He then climbed into the trees, opened the bottle, and began to drink the water.  I couldn’t help but laugh at his ingenuity.

During the hike we had to cross a suspension bridge.  I’ve seen bridges like this in movies, but never had the opportunity to cross one myself.  The bridge rocked back and forth as I walked across it, but I found the experience rather exhilarating.

I was also able to see Mayan ruins during the hike.  The guide did a wonderful job explaining the statues and their meaning.

I learned about the importance of hand placement in the Mayan culture.  For example, holding one hand up with the palm out and the other hand down with the palm up, is the symbol for peace and love.

After our hike, we headed downtown to visit the local shops and do a little more exploring.
