I went to Mobile, Alabama, last week to see my cousin Becca graduate with her nursing degree.
While I was there, I was able to visit her farm. Becca has a potbellied pig named Penelope. The pig was a bit grouchy, but I did get to pet her for a little while. Her hair is really bristly and tough. It hurts if you pet her against the fur.
Becca also had a donkey named Timothy. The donkey was a bit nervous, but friendly. I was able to pet and hand feed the donkey. However, he ran away when I laughed.
In the house Becca has an aquarium with an albino frog. The frog was under water, so I decided to reach into the aquarium and touch the frog. It jumped so fast that it scared me. I jerked my hand out of the aquarium and screamed like a little girl. Becca thought the whole thing was funny, but it was a little embarrassing.
I had a great time visiting Pate Farm.
Lily Flagg was a Jersey cow and the world’s top producer of milk in the 1890’s. She was owned by W. E. Mathews and General Samuel Moore of Huntsville, Alabama.
Lily Flagg won numerous state fairs and was invited to compete at the Chicago World Fair, which was an extreme honor. While in Chicago, an inexperienced farm hand was given the job of caring for Lily Flagg. He thought by not milking her for a couple of days, she would produce even more milk during the competition.
However, failing to milk a cow on a daily basis results in swelling of the udders and can lead to infection. As a result, Lily Flagg did not perform well and lost the competition.
Lily Flagg went on to win other awards and was later used for breading. Cows with Lily Flagg in their pedigree sold for top dollar.
Lily Flagg was the most famous cow in Alabama. In Huntsville, there is a road named after her. Her name continues to live on, even thorough she died over a hundred years ago.
Jimmy Dean was a popular singer and actor in the 1950s and 1960s. He partnered with his brother Don and started a hog farm business in Plainview, TX. The brothers sold sausage to a local diner and their business quickly morphed into the largest supplier of sausage in America.
I prefer living in rural communities. As you drive away from the city, there are fewer and fewer cars on the road. There are also long stretches of road surrounded by woods and fields. However, traffic jams can still happen even in the middle of nowhere.
The Cowboy Church movement is designed to reach a certain people group, which has its own cultural norms.
This church building was located in a barn, which is in the middle of a working ranch. Right outside the door of the church was an Australian Cattle Dog and a horse.
Their belief system is typical for a Christian church. The main difference is in how they package it and teach the members to apply it to their own life.
The Monrovia Library sponsored a transportation and vehicle show today. Mom and I decided to check it out and it was really interesting.
People were allowed to climb on and enter most of the vehicles, which I enjoyed. There were several vehicles that I have never had a chance to look at the inside of, and a few of them surprised me by how much equipment was packed into each space.
