Originally, Huntsville was called the Town of Twickenham. Therefore, the Twickenham District is located in the oldest part of Huntsville. The architectural variety and the history of the area makes it a fun place to visit.
Twenty years ago, there was a quadruple homicide in this house. The victims were teenagers and they were killed for accusing a young man of stealing a cell phone.
The guilty individual, as well as his two accomplices, were convicted and the house was eventually abandoned.
I drive by this house all the time and this week I was compelled to look inside of it. It’s hard to describe how I felt entering the house.
There was a mixture of sadness and grief, due to the senseless murders that happened here. I can’t even imagine how those poor teenagers felt as they realized their lives were coming to an end. Also, I felt angry. How can someone be so evil and callused?
I didn’t know the teenagers, but I feel for them and their families. I wonder what they would have accomplished if their lives were not taken from them.
I left the house with a heavy heart and a lot of questions.
With five dogs in the house, floor cleaning is a daily necessity. I decided the Thaler family needed a robotic vacuum cleaner to help with this chore and I named him Sparky.
I admit I was concerned about how the dogs would react to Sparky. However, they just looked at him and then wondered off to do their doggy stuff. Apparently, the boys don’t find Sparky to be all that interesting.
Welcome to the Thaler Family and to your new home, Sparky.
In 1987, on Halloween, our house was destroyed by a fire.
I was 14 years old at the time. My brother and I spent the day, just like every other day. We goofed around and played games. We talked about what we were going to do that night. It was Halloween, so we had plans for some fun activities.
We just moved into the house a week prior and nobody knew about the electrical problems in the attic. That afternoon, two hot wires touched and set off a spark. That spark turned into a fire. Since there were no smoke detectors in the attic, the fire went unnoticed by me and my family.
The neighbor saw smoke and flames coming from the roof, so he ran over to our house and was frantically banging on the door. He was yelling for us to get out of the house, because it was on fire.
All of us ran out as quickly as possible. The fire department was called and they responded in a matter of minutes. My brother and I sat in the front yard and watched as the firefighters battled the blaze.
I remember feeling like it was a dream. I wasn’t upset about the situation at that time, so I guess I was just in a state of shock.
The fire destroyed most of the house. The roof over the living room and dining room area had caved in and there was a good bit of water damage to areas that were still standing.
We stayed with relatives for a few days and then moved into a rental house. Luckily, my parents had purchased homeowners insurance, so the house was rebuilt and a couple months later we were able to move back into our home.
I always think about that fire on Halloween. I think about how lucky we were, since nobody was hurt. I think about how it felt to watch our home being destroyed by a fire and not being able to do anything about it. I think about the firefighters that battled the blaze. I think about the people that helped us salvage some of our belongings, allowed us to use their garage to store those items, gave us a place to sleep until we could move into the retail home, and even cooked a meal for us to eat that night.
A lot of people helped us during that time. Some of them were friends and family, but some of those people were strangers. I appreciate what everyone did for us. It meant a lot to me and my family.
We moved into our new house on Wednesday and I have been extremely busy the last few days. For the most part, our move went smoothly.
Thursday morning I could not find any socks, so I wore house shoes all day. At least I was comfortable.
I am still excited about this new house and I know we will make a lot of fun memories here.
Garages are usually not ideal places for working on projects. They tend to get very hot in the summer.
You can improve the climate in your garage by:
- Adding insulation in the walls and in the attic
- Installing an insulated garage door
- Installing a vent that runs from the central unit into the garage. Whenever your central unit turns on in the house, it will also blow cool air or heat into the garage.
A garage can be an enjoyable addition to your house, with just a few improvements.
I created this piece of artwork for our new home. I wanted a reminder of why it is important to stay within the budget and avoid going into debt.
