Jack Daniel’s Distillery

Last week, Mom and I went to the Jack Daniel’s Distillery.  It is the oldest registered distillery in the United States and is located in Lynchburg, Tennessee.

They use limestone spring water, corn, rye, and Barley to make the sour mash.  The liquid is filtered through charcoal one drop at a time for mellowing.  Then it is played in a wooden barrel for at least 4 years.

After 4 years, the barrel is opened and tested by professional tasters.  They decide if the whiskey is ready or if it needs to spend a few more years in the barrel.

Frist Art Museum – Nashville, Tennessee

The building was originally a post office and was constructed in the 1930s.  It’s a stunning building with beautiful walkways and grand staircases.  It was built with white Georgia marble and gray-pink Minnesota granite.

After the new post office was built in the 1980s, the building had little purpose and was mostly unused.  Dr. Thomas Frist, Jr. worked with the city of Nashville to convert the building into a visual arts museum, which opened to the public on April 8, 2001.

There are still large areas under construction, so the gallery was smaller than I anticipated based on the size of the building.  However, I did enjoy my time there and fell in love with the architecture.

Historic Travelers Rest Museum – Nashville, Tennessee

Saturday, we went to Nashville, Tennessee.  While we were there we visited the Travelers Rest Museum.

The Overton family home was named Travelers Rest  and was owned by Judge John Overton.  The plantation played a vital role during the Battle of Nashville, since battles were fought on the grounds.

After the war, the Overtones provided services for disabled Confederate veterans and founded the Confederate Soldiers’ Home.

The Overtone house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now a museum.

I know it sounds nerdy, but my favorite part of the museum was the old school house.

Wonder Works Museum

Wonder Works Museum is located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.  The building looks like an upside-down house, which makes the museum a bit unique.

Wonder Works is filled with interactive exhibits for children and adults to enjoy.  It also has rides and games that are fun, educational, and challenging.

My favorite thing at the museum was the flight simulator.  I am sad to say that I crashed my spaceship while trying to land.  Oh well, it was till fun.

Titanic Museum

The Titanic Museum is located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.  It contains artifacts salvaged from the Titanic, pictures taken of passengers and crew members, as well as replicas of the ship.  The museum also offers educational videos and recorded interviews done with survivors.

This is a wonderful museum, because visitors are able to learn a lot about the Titanic disaster and it personalizes the stories of the individuals affected by the disaster.
